The honest answer: start with the guitar that makes you want to pick it up. If your heroes play acoustic singer-songwriter material, a steel-string acoustic will keep you inspired. If you dream in rock solos, an electric will feel like coming home.

Physically, electrics are easier on the fingers — lighter strings, lower action. Acoustics build calluses and strength faster, and they are self-contained: no amp, no cables, no excuses.
