What Is a Raga? A Beginner's Map to Indian Melody

Ask a textbook and it will tell you a raga is a melodic framework: a set of notes with rules of ascent and descent. Ask a musician and they will tell you a raga is a mood, a time of day, a personality you slowly befriend.

Both are right. Raga Yaman carries the serenity of early evening; Bhairav holds the gravity of dawn. The rules — aroha, avaroha, vadi, samvadi — are simply the grammar that lets the emotion speak.

In our Foundation vocal course, students learn their first raga not by memorising rules but by listening, humming and recognising phrases. The grammar arrives naturally, the way children learn to speak.
